Thompson transverse Mercator

Classifications

cylindric
conformal

Aspect

One possible transverse development for ellipsoidal transverse Mercator.

Graticule

Meridians: Central meridian is straight; others are complex curves.
Parallels: Complex curves.

Scale

Highly inflated at the extremities away from the central meridian.

Distortion

Low near the central meridian, increasing away from it.

Similar projections

The ellipsoidal transverse Mercator has parallels correctly (but not evenly) spaced along the central meridian.
Wallis 2 transverse Mercator is similar until reaching the extremities.

Origin

Described by E.H. Thompson in 1945, as communicated to L.P. Lee, who published comments in 1976. This projection arises as an intermediate transformation on the way to the ellipsoidal transverse Mercator.
