James far-side perspective

Description

A perspective projection contrived to minimize distortion within the bounding circle that encompasses about 70% of the sphere.

Parallels: Concentric circles in polar aspect.

Variant: Original James at 1.5×R or Clarke revision at 1.368×R.

Origin

Proposed by Henry James in 1857. In 1862 Alexander Ross Clarke, collaborating with James, proposed a revision in the point of perspective to yield better optimization of distortion.
