Parameters: Pole-line stretch 0.0 ≤ β ≤ 1.0

Classifications

pseudocylindric
equal-area

Graticule

Meridians: Portions of sinusoids except when β = 0, giving straight meridians.
Parallels: Straight parallel lines.
Poles: Points if β = 1; lines otherwise, with the length being √(1–β²) times the length of the equator.
Symmetry: About the central meridian and the equator.

Scale

Depends on parameterization.

Distortion

Depends on parameterization.

Parameters

β, related to the length of the pole line. With β = 0, the projection is a cylindric equal-area with standard parallel of 28°40′. With β = 1, the projection is vertically stretched sinusoidal.

Similar projections

The simple equal-area homotopy also creates a continuum of equal-area projections between cylindric and sinusoidal.
Kavrayskiy VI results when β = √3/2.

Origin

Nikolay Andreyevich Urmayev, 1950.
