Meridians: Straight lines.
Parallels: Arcs of circles spaced equivalently to the equatorial stereographic projection.
Poles: Points.

Similar projections

Equidistant conic has parallels of constant spacing.

Origin

Presented by Carl Braun in 1867. Braun projected the sphere from the south pole onto a cone tangent at latitude 30°N.
