General cylindric equal-area projection.

Meridians: Straight, evenly spaced.
Parallels: Straight, with variable spacing.

Scale

Correct along one parallel and the parallel of opposite sign; constant along each parallel.

Distortion

Free of distortion along one parallel and the parallel of opposite sign.

Similar projections

This is the base projection for many specializations.

Origin

Johann Heinrich Lambert proposed the first form of the projection in 1772, using 0° as the standard parallel. No one is credited with the generalized form, though Lambert surely recognized the possibility.
