Polyhedral Globe

Post by nikezzz »

Hey daan,

is there a way to do Polyhedral Globes in Geocart - especially a Equal-area Truncated Icosahedron map?
I have found them on this website http://www.csiss.org/map-projections/ and the Truncated Icosahedron on http://www.csiss.org/map-projections/Po ... hedron.pdf

I need to reproject a plane chart projection to this Truncated Icosahedron map - so is there a way to do this in Geocart or could this projection be added to Geocart?

Best regards and thanks in advance

Hello nikezzz, and welcome to the forums.

Unfortunately Geocart does not have this projection. It has the triangular form of Snyder’s equal-area polyhedral development, but not the hexagonal or pentagonal forms. I should add it, given that I co-authored a paper representing a generalization of the projection!

Sorry for the missing projection. Yours was the first request.

Hey cool perfect :D so how long will it take you to add this projection to Geocart?

No Problem - Geocart is such a great program and has so many projections and I wouldn't know how I could get my work done without it.

Hello Nikezzz. Thanks for the kind words.

I wouldn’t hold my breath for the projection to appear in an update. I’ll definitely add it to the list, but I can’t predict a time.

Hopefully some of the other projections will tide you over until then.
;)

Best,
