Starting map does not appear

I used Geocart 3 successfully a few years ago when it first came out — it was great! Returning to it now (2015), when I try to create a new map, pressing command-N, I get a new window, but it is empty, the starting map does not appear, and all the options in the "Map" and "Projection" menus are greyed out. I did a reinstall from the installation disk, but still no starting map. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Wow. Sorry you went to all that trouble. Just hold down the shift key (or any modifier key, really) while scanning the projection menus. Select the projection you want. This is a shorthand for, "Make a new map based on this projection."

Longhand is to select New from the Map menu. Then change the projection to whatever you want.
