I've been researching this and I had a chat with a friend who is an intellectual property lawyer.
Providing the ability to map to an icosahedron should not be a problem as long as you don't call it a dymaxion projection, and ensure that the default mapping is NOT the protected projection.
Others have mapped to a 20-sided solid before and since; it's the particular projection, not the projection medium, that can be protected.

Thanks for trying to be helpful. The inquiry is specifically about Bertin’s projections. Nobody’s looking for “alternatives”.
