Font problems
Font problems
I think that I will a regular on this forum until I grasp most things, alas the problem is a font one. I get the Error box stating that Font Helvetica: The font of that name does not exixt. Alright I do not have Helvetica on my system and most of my needs are ususing fonts like Times New Roman, Verdana and Arial. How can I change the text label files so that they can marry up with my fonts or am I going down the wrong road completely. When I opened up a copy of the label in Notepad (default programme) I tried using the Format menu and clicked on Font and scrolled up to Arial or verdana and then hit OK but nothing happened except the same error box. I even restarted Geocart again but to no avail. Ant thoughs, its bound to be something embarressing. Howiet
Re: Font problems
Hello Howiet.
The labeling mechanism can seem a little complicated at first. It is covered in the manual in Appendix F, Typesetting databases.
You need to change the font name within the labels file to something that is installed on your system. You can check which fonts are installed and have the right format by going to the Help menu and selecting Available Fonts.... There you can see the exact name by which you should refer to the font within the labels file.
As an example, if the label file looks like this:
...then you would need to change “Helvetica” to one of the fonts listed in the Available Fonts list.

Geocart typesetting Data Base Version 1
%0 "Helvetica" 9.5 17 0 0 0 100 3
: End of font declarations
0 -90.0 "South Pole" 1 2 + 2

Re: Font problems
Hi Daan,
I tried again changing the name of the typeface but to no avail, still kept on getting an error message and then I asked an interactive media developer about my problem, I gave him the file and he told me that wwhen I saved the new file the file endings for the Mac dropped off, something about spacing ( I think thats what he said). He said that if I downloaded Notepad2 the problem would not arise and lo and behold it works. I saved a copy of the particular label with the ending arial, so when I scroll through the labels folder I can choose the right font. This will save me some time in the long run. I don't know whether I am the only one to experience this but if not then others may benefit from my problems.
Thanks again for your quick response to my original question.
Frustrations at a very low level, none at all really but I am sure I will become frustrated at some point in the future.
I am really enjoying making maps, sounds corny but...

Re: Font problems
Hello, Howiet.
Your experience concerns me. Geocart is written to be agnostic about line endings: Macintosh, Windows, Unix, or even mixed should work. Would you happen to have kept around a copy of the file that does not work? If you could put the working file and the non-working file into a ZIP archive and e-mail them to me, I would like to examine them, if it would not be too much trouble for you.
Thanks & regards,
