To achieve this 5760x2880 version, I followed these steps:
1. get 1500x1440 left cut from the 2880x1440 image, and a similar cut for the right side
2. scale both images with Waifu2x (medium noise reduction)
3. cut left 2880x2880 of first result, and right 2880x2880 of second result
4. join the halves
To avoid wasting space on this huge database image, this database is in Dropbox.

Re: Larger political databases
That’s a great result considering that it’s a low-res image which was puffed up!
The three versions of a politcal map that I’ve used so far can be viewed (projected to Patterson) here (v1) and here (v2) and here (v3).
In case anyone’s interested, I can provide the plate carrée files of v1 and v2 (which work fine with Geocart), both are 4000 x 2000.
v3 however, although I already used it on my website, is not quite finished and I’d still like to improve some details before I think about releasing it.

Re: Larger political databases
Of course one can't recover all details from a small image, so the larger versions are imperfect, but still much better than the standard political databases.
Here is a huge (3600 height, excluding the border) map using this database, using Point-pole Winkel Tripel (Aitoff mixed with loximuthal, loximuthal standard parallel is 0 and loximuthal is shrunk horizontally by 0.70710678), with 5 degree graticule:

Feel free to use this as a wall-map, add your own labels, etc.
