Which program did you use to mix light world image with Tissot indicatrix? The program I use makes the circles darker than in your pictures. Here is my manipulated version (adding more circles) anyway:

I’ve set the layer containing the Tissot indicatrix to an opacity of 65%.
I’m using PhotoLine, but any app supporting layers should be able to do that.

Oh, and just for the record…

- The Tissot indicatrix images that I used are provided at 2, 6, 10, 15, 30 and 45 degree (lesser at the poles for each).
In that order:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tissot_6deg.png
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tissot_10deg.png
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tissot_15deg.png
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tissot_30deg.png
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tissot_45deg.png

- Apart from just checking Geocart’s Map -> Tissot Indicatrices menu, you can also set the Tissot ellipses at coordinates and sizes that you prefer using a metric lines database (see Appendix J of the manual). The downside is that Geocart doesn’t render filled ellipses, you’d have to export the file as PDF and set a fill color for all ellipses in an appropriate application (again, I use PhotoLine for this).

I couldn't reproduce it. Here is the modified Sottish indicator image to mix with light world map:

Changes: Added more circles in high latitudes.

The Tissot ellipses in your image have a different color value than the ones that I linked to, which I used for my image.
Since I don’t know how you built that image I can’t say what was going wrong.

When I compared the color myself, I noticed something weird: If I open my tissot indicatrix image in the same program as I saved it (RealWorld Cursor Editor) then copy it to paint.net (RealWorld Cursor Editor takes color from screen, not image) I get correct color values (images pasted like this are vertically flipped, but it doesn't matter because of symmetry). But if I open it in paint.net, I get darker color values. I'll try to copy the correct colors from paint.net to PhotoLine and mix the layers with 65% opacity with this.
