projections

Post by carl voyer »

hello
I would like to know if it is possible to make projections of Buckminster Fuller and Bertin with Geocart 3
I put in room attached pictures of these projections
thank you in advance for your response
carl

PS : I can't put room attached

Hello Carl. Welcome to the forum.

Because The Buckminster Fuller Institute’s policy toward copyright/trademark of the Fuller dymaxion projection is unclear and has (anecdotally) caused trouble for other people in the past, I have chosen not to implement the projection in Geocart, at least until I have better information.

I do not have a rigorous definition of the Bertin projection. Possibly it is the same as Briesemeister, but I cannot tell. If it is just an oblique view of some existing projection that itself is not rare, then Geocart can image it. If its mathematics are independent of other projections then I would need a rigorous specification of the projection before I could add it to Geocart.

Thank you for your response
I understand the problem with the right projection Buckminster Fuller.
The projections of Bertin because there are two (one is regional compensation) but I can not provide the calculations that were used. This is not a projection of Briesemeister even if she looks great.
I can not integrate the two small attachments showing these two different projections to show you and I do not understand why.
Thank you for your interest to this message

Carl, if you e-mail the images to the "support" address at mapthematics.com, I can take a look at them to see why you’re having trouble posting them here in the forum.

Thanks.

Carl, I found a configuration problem in the forums coinciding with a recent update. That is what prevented you from adding your images. Here they are:

monde_bertin.gif (24.49 KiB) Viewed 4617 times
Bertin1953.gif
Bertin1953.gif (15.32 KiB) Viewed 4617 times
I have no information about the mathematics of these projections. The first one appears to be based on similar principles as Raisz’s armadillo. The second is an oblique projection centered on eastern Europe. It might even be a projection that Geocart has implemented, but I cannot tell without a lot of manual comparisons. Do you have Bertin’s descriptions of these projections? May I ask what use you intend for the projections?

With apologies for the difficulties,

Hello Daan
Thank you for including these two projections
I am French and projections are very common in France, so I wondered if you could integrate them Geocart.
However, I can not find the mathematical descriptions of these projections.
I'll keep looking but if someone on the forum might have this information, that would be great.
Thank you again for your patience and understanding.

Snyder just barely mentions Bertin’s projections in Flattening the Earth—Two Thousand Years of Map Projections, but he does not describe or illustrate them. I see there is a book by Bertin, “Semiologie Graphique” which has been translated into English as “Semiology of Graphics” and published originally by the University of Wisconsin Press at Madison. It has been reprinted by ESRI recently. I do not know if the projections are described in that text, however. Do you?

In theory, the book Graphic Semiology contains no description of these projections.
I continue to seek information from my side, but so far without result.
Thank you for your patience and hope that someone who reads this message on this forum will help us find such information and descriptions
thank you again

ESRI kindly supplied me with a copy of their English translation of Bertin’s Semiology. While it does display the two projections in an admirably detailed treatment of map projections, the text gives no references for it. Snyder’s “Bibliography of Map Projections” does not list any publication of Bertin’s that describes the projection other than Semiology. At this point I think we have to assume that Bertin never published the development of the projection. Unfortunate.
