If you consider a flat-polar equal area the Hammer-Wagner is really good too.

Yes. Frančula XIV that I mentioned before is actually a variant of the Hammer–Wagner (or Wagner VII as it's also known). After Frančula XIV, my next favourite variants are probably Frančula V and Tobias's Wagner BCW-E, but the original is pretty good too, and in my opinion, Wagner left a lot less room for improvement with his equal-area projections than with his compromise projections.

Well, pretty good except for that ridiculously skinny Africa.

Seems like Africa is skinnier on not only equal area projections but also on flat-polar ones.

In the Hammer–Wagner? It's skinny, but I wouldn't say ridiculously so.

Of course, with modern computers, I can easily Bromlify the projection.

Not as much in any cylindrical Equal-Area that doesn't have the Equator as the only standard parallel anyway.

Yes, with equal-area projections, as you increase the pole line length, the parallels near the poles have to bunch closer together to compensate the E–W stretching. If the axis ratio is kept constant, then the parallels near the equator have to spread out, making Africa skinnier. It's an example of how any change you make will rarely make the projection better everywhere, improvements in one place coming at the expense of other parts of the projection.

Still, a skinnier Africa caused by a pole line (or at least E–W stretching near the poles, which is of course possible without a pole line) is a price worth paying to reduce the extreme bending of the outer meridians found in projections with an elliptical boundary.

Glad you like the latter. :)

Fully agreed.
But I like that, leaves more to experiment on for me. ;)

Plus playing with map projections is really great!
